Lilo & Stitch is our favorite story about an alien disguised as a dog and the little girl who teaches him to love. We love it so much that we went on a fact-finding mission to discover some little-known gems from this charming film’s production process. Gather your ‘ohana around and buckle up for some knowledge:

1. The original story focused solely on an alien living in a forest, trying to overcome his isolation and find out where he came from. Lilo didn’t become a part of the film until much later during story development.

3. Stitch was not originally supposed to talk, but when the filmmakers realized the story hinged on him being able to express himself at the film’s end, they began developing his voice. Director Chris Sanders provided Stitch’s voice during test animation, and eventually everyone got so used to it that they decided to keep it.

4. Stitch was originally supposed to the leader of an intergalactic gang, and Jumba was supposed to be his former partner who was sent to earth to find him. The filmmakers eventually decided to make Stitch a genetic mutation instead.

9. While on a tour of Kauaʻi, filmmakers noticed that their Hawaiian tour guide seemed to know someone everywhere they went. They were so struck by the guide’s explanation of the term “‘ohana” as it relates to an extended family, that they made it the central theme of the film.

She is the older sister and legal guardian of Lilo . She first appeared in Lilo & Stitch and has been portrayed in all media by Tia Carrere with the exception of the PlayStation video game in which she was voiced by Vanessa Marshall. Nani has been present for 13 episodes only out of 65 and also has been absent for 53 episodes out of the whole series making that 65 episodes.

Nani is Lilo's older sister, and was appointed Lilo's guardian after the deaths of their parents in a car accident. She is said to be 19 years old in the first film. As a result of having to support herself and Lilo she is often stressed and busy. Her business often interferes with her friendship with David , whom later serves as her love interest. She does care deeply for Lilo, and fears losing her to social workers like Cobra Bubbles. Nani is known for her inability to hold down a full-time job, due in part of the adventures of Lilo and Stitch . She is also noted for being a terrible cook.

Nani appears in the film, having become Lilo's sole guardian after their parents' recent death. Nani is visited by a social worker named Cobra Bubbles who is concerned that Nani cannot adequately take care of Lilo. He is considering putting Lilo in foster care, but Nani refutes this by citing that she is the only family (A.K.A. "ohana") that Lilo has left. However, Nani will have to prove that she is capable of caring for Lilo in order to prevent Lilo from going to a foster home, a task that proves to be a difficult one.

After realizing that Lilo has no friends at hula school (Mertle Edmonds and the other girls bully her), Nani allows Lilo to get a pet from the pound. Lilo chooses Stitch , who, unknown to either girl, is actually an alien. Later, Nani is forced to take Lilo and Stitch with her as she tries to find a new job. Unfortunately, Stitch's attempts to evade capture by Jumba and Pleakley keep ruining her chances. Nani's friend David, having seen Nani, encourages Nani to take Lilo surfing with them to improve their mood. However, Jumba makes an attempt to capture Stitch from underwater. To everyone, it appears that Stitch had tried to drown Lilo. Mr. Bubbles sees the whole thing and tells Nani that he will come for Lilo in the morning.

While waiting for Mr. Bubbles the next morning, Nani is informed of a job offer by David. Nani orders Lilo to stay at home while she goes to apply. While she is gone, a fight between Stitch and Jumba results in the house being destroyed and Lilo calls Mr. Bubbles for help. Nani returns at the same time as Mr. Bubbles arrives and the two have a brief argument over Lilo's well-being. When Lilo is kidnapped by Gantu , Nani accompanies Stitch, who has revealed his alien origins, in Lilo's rescue. At the end, Nani and Lilo are appointed as Stitch's wardens by the Grand Councilwoman while Cobra Bubbles, who is revealed to be a former CIA agent, is enlisted to supervise the new family.

Taking place some time after the events of the first film, Nani has adjusted to life with an extended family, now living with both Stitch, Jumba, and Pleakley. Her regular occurrences include keeping the house in order, despite the color cast of characters that inhabit it, raising both Lilo and Stitch, working her job at the beach, and spending time with David, who she is said to have been dating for three weeks by the beginning of the film.

Nani is usually seen working a variety of jobs to support herself and Lilo. As always, she is concerned for Lilo's well-being, though she does allow Lilo to capture the rogue experiments. The episode "Retro" features Nani's middle school friends, who mistakenly believe that she is the Vice President of the company she works for. She sometimes helps with the experiment-hunting, such as in the episode "Phantasmo" where she saves Lilo and Stitch from a ghost-like experiment. She also rescued Lilo from being annihilated by Gantu in "Fibber", where she also briefly pretended to be Pleakley's fiancée.

Nani is seen after Lilo, Stitch, Jumba and Pleakley return from the Galactic Federation with awards for the successful extraction of the 625 experiments. Stitch, Jumba and Pleakley turn down their awards at first to stay on earth, so as not to break Lilo's heart. However, Lilo notices that they really do want their dream rewards and Nani convinces her that she's doing the right thing and showing aloha spirit by letting them go. Later on, after an evil clone of Stitch named Leroy arrived on earth to kidnap the experiments, he sneaks into the house and pretends to be Lilo when Nani almost notices him. At the end of the film, Nani is seen alongside David, Lilo, Jumba, Pleakley, Stitch, Mertle and all the experiments, taking an ohana picture.

It was another regular night at Nani's home while Lilo was out with Keoni on another date and Stitch doing who knows what. Nobody was sure what Stitch was doing because Lilo was oddly spending more time with Keoni than she ever did with Stitch. If that's not bad enough, Angel, also dumped Stitch because she was so mad at him for some reason, but for what? Stitch did not know why or how she was angry with him. Stitch also could not believe he was thinking this or said this to Angel's face, but he really didn't care either. Stitch was just tired of all the fighting, all the drama, and mostly everything.

And then there's David. He is a great boyfriend towards Nani; He loves her, respects her, plays with her in certain way as her boyfriend, but she feels like there's something missing in her life not in her relationship with David. She have someone else she also loved, maybe even more than David, but the strange part is she really didn't know who she truly loved yet. David is her boyfriend but she is in love with someone else.

Nani finally decided to get out of her bed and do something in her free time while Stitch was out somewhere and Lilo was out with Keoni. Nani released her from her punishment early for good behavior yesterday. Nani decided to start doing some cleaning and make Stitch some coconut cakes. She started doing the cleaning first before making the coconut cakes. Pleakley soon came downstairs and greeted Nani while she started to clean.

Stitch was still mad at Angel and didn't want to see her anymore, but he didn't want to think about how badly she dumped him. As confusing it sounds, Stitch was really devastated from losing his girlfriend and for breaking up with best thing that might have ever happened to him. His cousins was there to comfort him and to be there to help him through his tough times from breaking up with his girlfriend. Slushy was the one to talk to Stitch first to comfort him about Angel.

"Look Stitch, isa okie-taka. Angel naga good for youga anyway, youga find someone better," Slushy said attempting to cheer his cousin up. Carmen then came up to Stitch next and brushed past Slushy to get next to Stitch.

"Did, meega just think that about, Nani?" Stitch asked himself in total shock from not expecting that, but he was also alright with it cause Nani is pretty in anyway. Stitch continued to think about Nani and everything about her. Stitch started to chuckle a little bit more as he thought about it more. She had pretty eyes, hair, nails, and skin. Stitch also started thinking about how Nani looked in her green tube top which made him blush and smile while also staring off into space. Stitch really started to feel better about breaking up with Angel really fast the more he thought about Nani.

But before he could eat it all savagely and make a big mess, he stopped for a minute to look at Nani who was still smiling sweetly at him, then decided to have a little bit of table manners before he started to eat. Because of some warm, strange feeling he had he didn't want to eat so messy in front of Nani like he would sometimes do when he eats.

"Um..." Stitch started, not really sure how to start a conversation, "Who Nani made food for?" Stitch asked nervously while scratching the back of his head. Nani chuckled a bit as she looked at Stitch and responded to his question.

Nani is Lilo's big sister who was appointed as Lilo 's sole guardian after the death of their parents who were killed in a car accident. She is said to be 19 years old in the first film. As a result of having to support herself and Lilo, she is often stressed and busy. Her busyness often interferes with her friendship with David , who later serves as her love interest. She is also noted for being a terrible cook, yet excels greatly in mathematics and chemistry.

She carries the burden of supporting herself and her younger sister both financially and parentally. Naturally, she is usually very busy and under a great deal of stress. Her age is not made clear, but the fact that she was made her sister's guardian suggests that she is at least eighteen years old by the time of the first movie. She loves Lilo devotedly, but does not always understand her. Nani often serves as a gentle voice of reason and advice in the films and show — and occasionally, not so gentle. In the original film, it was Nani who allowed Lilo to adopt Stitch from the pound , where he had been mistaken for a dog.

As a result of her stress, Nani is easily aggravated by Lilo and Stitch's antics, which often unfortunately interfere with her ability to find and hold a stable job. She frequently has to cope with and clean up after the various crises which involve Lilo, Stitch, Jumba and Pleakley (who often tries to help around the house, with mixed results). Her busy life sometimes makes it difficult for her to maintain a normal relationship with David Kawena , a local surfer, who is Nani's friend in the original film and future love interest. She is renowned among her household for her bad cooking. Her worst fear is noted to be losing Lilo to social workers like Cobra Bubbles , whom she at first disliked but, after the events of the first film, comes to trust and respect him.

In her debut in Lilo & Stitch , Nani wears an orange top with a pink heart on it, blue jean shorts, and tan boots with white socks, Later, when she went to find a job, she wore a blue top with khaki jeans and brown open-toed sandals. Then when she, Lilo, Stitch and David were surfing, she wore a two-piece blue bikini strip. Finally, near the end of the film, she wore a white shirt with red sleeves, blue jean shorts, tan boots and socks.

Dr. Jumba Jookiba is arrested and put on trial by the Galactic Federation for "illegal genetic experimentation", as evidenced by his Experiment 626, a living creature which is capable of creating untold chaos. However, Jumba is imprisoned while Experiment 626 is supposed to be exiled on a desert asteroid. 626 manages to escape in a spaceship and activates the hyperdrive , causing its guidance systems to malfunction and randomly set a course for Earth . The Grand Councilwoman dispatches Jumba and Agent Pleakley, the Council's Earth expert, to the planet to have 626 captured discreetly. 626 lands on the Hawaiian island of Kaua ʻ i , only to be knocked unconscious by a passing truck and taken to an animal shelter.

On Kaua ʻ i, Nani has been struggling to take care of her rambunctious younger sister, Lilo. A social worker named Cobra Bubbles expresses increasing concern that Nani has not been able to take adequate care of Lilo. Seeking a change, Nani decides that she will allow Lilo to adopt a dog and they go to the animal shelter, where Lilo immediately takes a keen interest in Experiment 626, who is impersonating a dog in order to escape. Lilo names 626 " Stitch " and shows him around the island. As Nani attempts to find a good job, Lilo tries educating Stitch about Elvis Presley , whom she calls a "model citizen". Despite this, however, Stitch's antics, including foiling Jumba and Pleakley's attempts to capture him, ruin Nani's chances of getting a job every time.

David, a friend of Nani's, invites Nani and Lilo to take a break and enjoy a day of surfing. While Nani, Lilo, and Stitch ride on a huge wave, Jumba makes one final effort to capture Stitch from underwater, causing Nani to wipe out , and Stitch unintentionally pulls Lilo down with him. Although everyone gets safely to shore, Cobra witnesses this unfortunate event, telling Nani that although she means well, Lilo's best interests mean she has to be placed with a foster family. After seeing how much trouble he has caused, Stitch leaves. Meanwhile, the Councilwoman relieves Jumba and Pleakley of their assignment, freeing Jumba to pursue Stitch using less covert methods.

Back on land, the Grand Councilwoman appears and is about to take Stitch into custody and retire Gantu, but when Stitch explains that he has found a family in Nani and Lilo, she discovers that he has become a civilized creature; Lilo also shows her the adoption paper, declaring she owns Stitch and that taking Stitch would be theft. The Councilwoman, before leaving, decrees that Stitch will be exiled on Earth and entrusted into the care of Lilo and Nani, and asks Cobra, who turns out to be a former CIA agent whom the Councilwoman met previously in 1973, to keep an eye on them. Together, they rebuild the house, and Jumba and Pleakley become members of Lilo and Stitch's family as well.

Animation has been set so much in ancient, medieval Europe — so many fairy tales find their roots there, that to place it in Hawai ʻ i was kind of a big leap. But that choice went to color the entire movie, and rewrite the story for us.

Dean DeBlois , who had co-written Mulan (1998) with Sanders, was brought on to co-write and co-direct Lilo & Stitch , while Disney executive Clark Spencer was assigned to produce. Unlike several previous and concurrent Disney Feature Animation productions, the Lilo & Stitch pre-production team remained relatively small and isolated from upper management until the film went into full production.
